The part we’re usually fabricating isn’t the operator itself. It’s what the operator bolts to: hinge plates, pillow block mounts, gate frame tabs, post brackets, and the occasional cracked section of the gate leaf where years of Tomball humidity and clay-heavy soil movement finally won.

Identifying what you need is the first step. On the operator arm, look for a stamped plate or embossed model number on the top of the housing. If it’s gone, measure the arm tube diameter. DoorKing 6300-series arms run 1.5-inch tube stock in most years, while the heavier 6400 runs 2-inch. That measurement matters because an aftermarket arm sized wrong won’t accept the original clevis pins, and forcing it means egged-out holes and a worse failure six months later. For hinge work, the real compatibility gotcha is the pivot bushing bore. DoorKing’s factory hinges are drilled for a 1-inch hardened pin on most swing models. A weld shop that doesn’t know that will build you a beautiful hinge with a 3/4-inch bore, and the gate will wallow and sag every time the wind catches it.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for factory DoorKing parts like clevis pins, limit cams, and operator arms, OEM is usually the right call because the metallurgy and tolerances are known to us and warrantied by DoorKing. Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate scrapes or drags at the free end. This is usually a sag hinge or a cracked weld at the hinge plate allowing the leaf to drop. The geometry changed by half an inch, but the operator doesn’t know that, and it’s now working against a misaligned load every cycle.
• You hear a rhythmic squeak or groan when the gate moves. Dry, egged-out hinge pins, or a weld that’s cracked but still hanging on. The noise is the two sides of the crack flexing against each other under load. It will fail completely, and it will fail when the gate is open and you’re late for something.
• The operator arm visibly wiggles where it bolts to the gate or post. That’s a mounting tab or bracket wallowing out. DoorKing operators deliver a lot of torque, and a loose mounting point means every cycle is hammering the bolt holes wider.
• Rust blooms line under the hinge plates or at the base of the gate frame. Tomball’s humidity and the occasional salt-sprayed coastal storm push moisture into steel faster than people expect. If you see rust staining under a weld, the joint is separating internally even if the bead still looks solid from the outside.
• The gate closes fine but won’t seal flush anymore. A broken weld on the frame’s cross-member lets the leaf twist slightly. The gate still opens and closes, but it leaves a three-inch gap or bounces against the stop. The operator is working harder every cycle, and the DoorKing motor is paying the bill.
