There’s a compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: Mighty Mule changed their keypad protocol between the MM and FM board generations. A keypad from an MM260 will not talk to an FM145 board, even though both plugs look identical from the outside. We carry both generations on the truck and verify the board revision before we wire anything. If you’re buying your own keypad, match the model number on the board, not the arm. The board label is inside the control box, usually on the back of the circuit board itself. As for OEM versus aftermarket: the OEM Mighty Mule keypads cost more but pair without adaptation. Signs Your Mighty Mule Access Control Installation Is Failing

• The keypad lights up but the gate won’t move. This usually means the board isn’t receiving the relay signal. Most often it’s a corroded wire terminal on the control board or a failed relay, not the keypad.
• PIN code works sometimes, not others. Intermittent response points to a marginal power supply. Mighty Mule boards want a clean 12 to 14 volts DC at the input. A transformer that’s drifted to 9 volts will still run the board but won’t reliably fire the relay.
• Wireless keypad range drops to arm’s length. The receiver antenna on the FM boards is a simple copper trace. Corrosion on the board or a metal fence panel that’s been added since the original install will kill range.
• The gate opens on its own, usually after rain. A wet keypad or a nicked wire in the conduit can bridge the relay contacts. This is the one that convinces owners the gate is haunted. It’s not. It’s a wiring fault.
• The keypad beeps but the code never registers. On the FM-series boards, this almost always traces back to a programming reset from a power surge. The board forgets its codes and has to be reprogrammed, and the surge protection needs to be inspected while we’re there.
