DoorKing Access Control Installation: The Tomball Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DoorKing access control systems throughout Tomball, with most keypad, card reader, and telephone entry installations running between $1,200 and $2,800 fully installed, depending on the model and wiring distance. We carry DoorKing-compatible boards, keypads, and readers on the truck, which means same-day replacement is usually possible when a board has failed or a keypad has gone dark. The typical call starts with an owner standing at their own gate, punching a code that worked yesterday, and getting nothing but a faint beep or complete silence.

What most homeowners discover is that access control failures are rarely the gate motor itself. It’s the board that interprets the code, the keypad ribbon cable that corroded, or a power supply that’s putting out 9 volts instead of 12. In Tomball’s humidity, we see these failures accelerate. We’ve pulled apart keypads off driveways near Boudreaux Road where the ribbon connector looked like it had been left in a swimming pool. The board still had life. The connection didn’t.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing access control breaks into two families: the older 1812 and 1814 telephone entry systems, and the newer 1830, 1834, 1835, and 1838 series. The 1812 doesn’t do card readers natively, which matters if you’re adding a reader. The 1830 series does support them, and many Tomball owners we visit have an 1830-series cabinet mounted at the gate with a model sticker that’s long since bleached white by Texas sun. To identify what you have, look on the inside door of the cabinet. DoorKing prints the model and serial there. If that’s gone, count the wiring terminals, not the buttons. The 1830 boards have a row of terminals for reader input that the 1812 boards simply don’t have.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: DoorKing parts are built to a higher moisture-resistance standard than most aftermarket equivalents, and in Tomball that matters. A cheap aftermarket keypad will work for about eighteen months here before the membrane starts ghosting keys. We’ll install aftermarket if a customer asks, but we won’t pretend it’s the same part. It isn’t. DoorKing’s own keypads are sealed differently where the ribbon meets the board. If we’re doing the install, our default is OEM. One compatibility note that catches people: DoorKing keypads and readers are not interchangeable between the 1812 and 1830 families without a retrofit board. The connector pitch is different. We’ve had customers buy a used keypad online and bring it to us, and we’ve had to tell them it physically won’t plug in.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing
  • The keypad lights but won’t accept codes. This is usually a failing main board or corrupted memory. DoorKing boards store codes in onboard memory that can corrupt after power surges, which Tomball gets regularly during storm season. The fix is a board swap and reprogram, not a keypad replacement.
  • The gate opens on its own or refuses to close. This points to a stuck relay on the board or a misconfigured timer. We see this after lightning strikes. The control board’s relay welds closed, and the gate just… goes. It’s unsettling to watch.
  • Card reader beeps but won’t grant access. If the reader beeps, it’s reading the card. The problem is upstream: either the door controller has lost its card database or the reader’s data line has a partial short. In humid months here, we find green corrosion on the reader terminals almost weekly.
  • Call box dials but no one can hear you. On the 1812 and 1814 systems, that’s usually the phone module or a degraded connection at the board. If you can hear the caller but they can’t hear you, the microphone circuit on the board has gone. That board is replaceable with a new unit in about an hour.
  • Intermittent operation: works at noon, dead at midnight. This is almost always a failing power supply. DoorKing systems run on 12-14 volts DC, and when a supply starts to go, it’ll hold voltage only when it’s warm. Our first move is to put a meter on the power terminals and watch the reading. If it’s swinging under load, the supply is dying, and that’s a $200-$400 fix rather than the $1,000+ board replacement most owners feared.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Tomball properties, here’s what we typically quote for DoorKing access control installation:

  • Keypad replacement: $350-$600 installed, including the part, wiring reconnect, and reprogramming of codes.
  • Main board replacement (1830 series): $600-$1,000 installed, including board, firmware setup, and code/card re-enrollment.
  • Full access control install (keypad, board, power supply, wiring): $1,200-$2,800, driven primarily by how far the gate sits from the house power source and whether we’re trenching new conduit.
  • Card reader add-on: $450-$800 installed, including reader, mount, and board configuration for reader input.

The variance is honest: how much wire we have to pull, whether the existing conduit is salvageable, and whether the old system was wired so poorly we’d rather start clean than patch. Every job includes the written price before we start (Haven Standard Clause 1), the labor, the part, wiring and programming, and a photo record of what was found and what was left (Clause 4). The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the repair for a full year. If anything we touched fails in that window, we’re back out at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. If you’re comfortable with a multimeter, you can safely pull the keypad face, check for 12 volts at the power terminals, and confirm whether the board is getting power. That tells you whether you’re looking at a keypad problem or a power supply problem, and it saves a diagnostic trip. What you should not do is attempt a board swap on a DoorKing 1830 series without the install manual and a known-good wiring diagram. These boards run 12-16 volts DC, which won’t hurt you, but the accessory terminals tie into the gate motor’s safety inputs. Wire the relay output to the wrong terminal and you can bypass the safety edge or the photo-eye, and now you have a gate that will close on a car or a child. We don’t say that to scare anyone. We say it because we’ve repaired gates where a previous DIY board swap took out the safety reversing loop, and the homeowner found out when the gate closed on their truck. If you’re not sure, call us. The diagnostic visit is a flat $75, and if you hire us for the repair, we fold that cost into the job.
